== Biography ==
"John Groff (E8) was granted 197 acres from the heirs of Hans Groff (E) on July 30, 1746. On April 3, 1758, he mortgaged 200 acres to Thomas Doyle, hatter, of Lancaster Borough. This mort[g]age was satisfied on April 20, 1763, five days after John Groff (E8) had sold this land to his brother, David (E9).
The C.F. Groff chart of 1867 shows "John Groff's wife Elizabeth from Philadelphia Co., residing in Maryland," and then lists eleven children but does not connect the box containing the list to a son of Hans Groff (E). Apparently there was confusion even then about where these children belonged.
The baptismal record at the German Reformed Church, Germantown, of Franciscus Groff (E88), dat. May 1, 1763, shows the sponsor as "Franciscus, grandfather". I now believe that the John Groff whose will was proved on June 10, 1797, in Frederick County, Maryland, was the son of Hans Groff (E). Jacob Groff (E81) and his family moved to Maryland by 1765, and is the only one listed correctly in ''Groff Book'' 1.
The George Groff listed as E82 (p. 69) is now listed as ?K13, and was probably a son of the George Groff listed as B4 (p. 20), who is now believed to be K1 and GR3411 instead of B4.
The Elizabeth Groff listed as E83 (p. 71) is now listed as ?DD31.
The Henry Groff listed as E84 (p. 71) was probably M3 also, who is believed to be K41.
Catharine Groff (was E85) is now E80."[[[#GroffBookII|The Groff Book, Volume 2]], p. 82]
