| 13 | == Biography == Oswald, who was nicknamed Osli was born in 1643. He was the son of [[Landis-620|Hans Landis]] and [[Bollier-23|Magdalena Bollier]]. He is not the same person as an older sibling, also named Oswald who died two years before on 27 April 1641. Of the ten children born to Magdalena Bollier Landis wife of Hans Heinrich Landis three died in early childhood: Oswald [Landis-513], the firstborn died at age 8 on 27 April 1641. Anna [Landes-511], the fifth-born died at age 3 on 13 May 1643. Hans Heinrich [Landis-509] died at age 3 on 30 November 1648. The two boys (Oswald and Hans Heinrich) who died were "replaced" in name by later-born siblings. It would follow that Anna probably would have been "replaced" had a girl baby been born after Anna's demise. At the dedication of baby Oswald also called Osli, the sponsors were: Oswald Hurliman and Barbara Baumann. The home/farm was Moosacher, Hirzel. Oswald is listed or identified in the Samuel Wenger book as 1.3.4a.8.7. Patrilinearly working back in time thus Osli was the seventh child born of the eighth-born of the first wife of the 4th child of the of the 3rd child of Johannes [Landis-132] and Katharina [Schinz-2]. == Sources == 1. Grandpa Hess' last sister died on May 28. she was 95 years. Her name is Clara Hess. You will find her bio if you go to google for Clara Hess, Lancaster, PA. Jay and I had visited her in March when we were down there. She just died of old age, I think. She was a very special person I'll send you the eulogy that Allegra wrote which has very interesting info for the family stories as well. Also on one of the Lancaster link there was a genealogy Hess link that spoke of Magdalena Hess who with her husband Hans Hess crossed the ocean in 1717 with 6 small children etc. These were the originals to come to N. America You may find some info there that you do not have in the family tree. Thanks for doing this. I need to learn how to put them in as well, I know -Marg Strom 5-28-08 written by Allegra for Aunt Clara's funeral Aunt Clara has always been a significant person in my life. We had a special bond. I was the first baby she helped deliver on the family farm where my parents lived and where she also lived with her mother and siblings. She would often remind me how I looked at birth, but dad was the one who gave me my name, because he thought I smiled that first day - "laughing Allegra" from Longfellow's poem. Clara's life story has featured a courageous move out of her home to the Lancaster Medical Office of Dr. Lockey, where she learned the "med tech' skills, which defined her life-long career. My sister shares that aunt Clara saved her from a lot of anguish. Aunt Clara had learned through her working with Dr. Lockey that the itching from poison ivy could be stopped on the spot by squeezing the juice of a popular Pennsylvania plant – jewel weed - on the infected part. It worked like a miracle, even for mosquito bites. She became a woman of knowledge from that time onward for Dorothy. She took this career to Haiti, which fascinated and challenged me in several ways. She introduced us to real people who looked different from us and ministered to them with the Christian Gospel and also by educating them in lab technologies. I began my own journey 4 years after high school, with the vague goal of being a "med tech" like Clara. I had to readjust my major to reflect my skill sets but her courageous, visionary, "trail blazing", high energy model inspired my career moves. My own Christian faith is best represented in my commitment to serve others. At retirement, she returned to the geographical area/family where she continued to find creative avenues to serve the God she loved - in spite of career and age related health issues. Her varied interests, energy, and engaging personality were evident as she loved to challenge her visitors to a game of Scrabble - she always beat me! Clara, you finally got the call you waited for so long - you are home at last. As I've often said to you, "I'll see you there". God be with you! Love, Allegra (her niece) From Lancasteronline.com: Clara Myer Hess Clara Myer Hess, 95, passed on to her eternal home Wednesday morning, May 28, 2008, at Calvary Fellowship Homes, Lancaster. She was the daughter of the late Abram B. and Carolyn Myer Hess. A native of Leola, Clara graduated from Lancaster General School of Nursing and Providence bible School (Gordon College) and is best remembered for her missionary career in Haiti from 1947-1980. Subsequent to her service in Haiti as a medical missionary with UFM International (now CROSSWORLD), Clara was instrumental in the founding of, and for many years served as a counselor in, the Dial-A-Prayer Ministry of Calvary Church. She was preceded in death by sisters, Ruth Wolgemuth, Anna Hess, Edith Overly, Esther Wolgemuth, Mary Hess and Miriam Stauffer; and brothers, Myer, Milt, Abram, Noah, Titus, and Paul. She is survived by four generations of nieces and nephews. Services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster, with Pastors Eric Creighton and Walter Jackson officiating. Interment will be in Eby Cemetery. Friends may call from 1-2 p.m. Sunday at the Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials in honor of Clara may be given to Calvary Church Missions Fund, address above, or to Calvary Fellowship Homes, 502 Elizabeth Drive, Lancaster, PA 17601. Arrangements by Groff-High Funeral Home, New Holland. | HESS, Clara Myer (I189)

| 25 | :[[Category: West Earl Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania]] :[[Category: Earl Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania]] :[[Category: Germantown, Pennsylvania]] == Biography == "John Groff (E8) was granted 197 acres from the heirs of Hans Groff (E) on July 30, 1746. On April 3, 1758, he mortgaged 200 acres to Thomas Doyle, hatter, of Lancaster Borough. This mort[g]age was satisfied on April 20, 1763, five days after John Groff (E8) had sold this land to his brother, David (E9). The C.F. Groff chart of 1867 shows "John Groff's wife Elizabeth from Philadelphia Co., residing in Maryland," and then lists eleven children but does not connect the box containing the list to a son of Hans Groff (E). Apparently there was confusion even then about where these children belonged. The baptismal record at the German Reformed Church, Germantown, of Franciscus Groff (E88), dat. May 1, 1763, shows the sponsor as "Franciscus, grandfather". I now believe that the John Groff whose will was proved on June 10, 1797, in Frederick County, Maryland, was the son of Hans Groff (E). Jacob Groff (E81) and his family moved to Maryland by 1765, and is the only one listed correctly in ''Groff Book'' 1. The George Groff listed as E82 (p. 69) is now listed as ?K13, and was probably a son of the George Groff listed as B4 (p. 20), who is now believed to be K1 and GR3411 instead of B4. The Elizabeth Groff listed as E83 (p. 71) is now listed as ?DD31. The Henry Groff listed as E84 (p. 71) was probably M3 also, who is believed to be K41.
