=== Birth Date ===The only source in this profile that is not simply someone's (unpublished) family tree is the Sons of the Revolutionary War application source. Looking on Ancestry.com by the SAR Membership number 72737, I could not find the record referenced. Moreover, I found another SAR Application with the birth year of 1697 crossed out in favor of "C. 1717".[SAR membership ID 89142]
The only source I have seen with the 1697 date is the Lancaster Mennonite Vital Records, however I have found these records in general to be not very reliable (the same index card with the 1697 date lists John's wife Elizabeth Carpenter as the daughter of Emanuel, has six of the original eleven children listed for John Groff and Elizabeth Carpenter crossed out by hand, and has other hand-made corrections for dates, for example). I therefore do not consider the 1697 date to have a real source.
The 1697 birth date also conflicts substantially with all sources on the life of Hans Graf, which hold that Jacob was his oldest son and the only son by his first wife. John is one of his younger children.
=== Death Date ===Years for John's death that I've seen are 1780, 1788 and 1797. 1780 has appeared on SAR applications, and also in "North America, Family Histories" which I believe is a compilation of lineages from Daughters of the American Revolution applications.[p. 171, "Lineage Book : NSDAR : Volume 142 : 1918". Ancestry.com. North America, Family Histories, 1500-2000 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations, Inc., 2016.Original data:]. The FindAGrave entry has 1788 even while including a picture of the gravestone with the 1797 date. The gravestone and Groff Book, Vol 2, cite the 1797 date, and there is a will that fits that date as well as the correct children's names. It seems to me that the most reliable sources all support the 1797 date and do not suggest that the John Groff who is the son of Hans Graf and Susanna (Kendig? Orndorf?) have death dates of 1780 or 1788. === Marriage(s) ===Sources seem pretty consistent that John married a daughter of Henry Carpenter, and also married an Elizabeth. The Groff Book has these as separate wives, while other sources assume they were one and the same, an Elizabeth Carpenter, or perhaps hold that he married first an Elizabeth Carpenter and then later another Elizabeth. I do not believe we need to sort out for certain the truth of these marriages before merging these profiles.
=== Conclusion ===There are many other John Groffs in the vicinity of Lancaster PA around this time, and there may be one with some of these other birth/death dates. But I believe we can be fairly assume that the most likely dates for the son of the Hans Graf attached as father to this profile are (ca. 1715 - 1797), and merge this profile with Groff-364.
