Hans Jacob Landis was born in 1667 in Rohrbach, Germany. The family had emigrated from Switzerland to Steinsfurt which is near Sinsheim and Rohrbach where many other Mennonites also settled away from persecution in Switzerland at that time. He died in 1730 in Lampeter Twp, Lancaster Co, PA.121 He was possibly the Hans Jacob Landis who was living in Immelshauf, Germany in 1709. with his wife Anna Witmer, their son Jacob (age 14), Hans (age 13), Benjamin (age 12), Barbara (age 4) and Anna (age 2).He and his family immigrated to Lancaster Co, PA in 1717. Jacob bought 150 acres of land with Ulrich Howry in Lampeter Twp, Lancaster Co, PA. Jacob took the southern half of the 150 acre tract and sold the other half of 75 acres to Andrew Schultz in March, 1722. He was first taxed at Lampeter Twp. in 1718 as Jacob Landis living next to Felix Landis and Benjamin Witmer. He was taxed again in 1721 and 1724 in Lampeter Twp. The inventory of his estate was filed on 2 Feb 1730 at Lancaster, PA and included 100 acres of land which was patented by his son Benjamin Landis. His widow Anna was listed by Richard Warren Davis as still living in Lampeter Twp area in 1732. Jacob's land in Lampeter Twp in 1746 was located next to Benjamin Witmer and near Felix Landus. In 1747 his land of 100 acres in Lampeter Twp was occupied by Christian Landis and in a deed to the land it states it was formerly Jacob Landis' Land. Christian was probably Jacob's youngest son.

Jacob Landiss
Among the earliest records of the Landis family in Pennsylvania is that found in the Minutes of a meeting of the Commissioners of the Property of the Province of Pennsylvania held at Philadelphia April 8, 1717. These Minutes tell of an agreement entered into by the Commissioners with Martin Kendig and John Herr for 5000 acres of land about Conestoga and Pequea Creeks to be settled by several of their countrymen lately arrived in Philadelphia.
In the list of those lately arrived is found the name of Jacob Landis. It is further noted in the records that Jacob Landis and Ulrik Hawry, jointly, took of the 5000 acres afore mentioned, a tract of 150 acres. Jacob Landis took the south half of the tract, 75 acres, and held it until October 7, 1724, when he sold it to Andreas Schultz. In March 1722 Jacob Landis bought 200 acres from the London Company.
Just how old Jacob was when he arrived in Pennsylvania is not definitely known, but from collateral evidence it is assumed he must have been about fifty years of age. This would fix his birth about the year 1670. He died about 1740.
Jacob Landis had but one son, Benjamin. In the records Benjamin is mentioned as an alien, that is not born on English soil. As both Jacob and Benjamin are listed in the tax roll of 1718 one can safely assume Benjamin to have been at least 21 years of age at the time. This is supposed to be the Benjamin Landis known in the Pennsylvania records as Rev. Benjamin Landis, the Mennonite preacher. He had three sons, Jacob, Benjamin and Henry. Miss Beulah F. Mumma compiled a very complete record of his descendants in 1925.

The Mennonite Jacob Landis married Anna Witmer about 1688 in Zurich, Switzerland. Jacob knew her family growing up as he lived on a farm in the neighborhood.
Jacob's family immigrated during 1717 and then in 1722 they bought farm land in Lancaster Co., PA and relocated one last time.
The rest of Anna & Jacob's lives were spent on their farm of 200 acres on both sides of what is now know as "The Old Road".
Their son Benjamin was the first Mennonite preacher in the area and where they lived became the center of the Mellinger church activities.

Ira Landis says he is probably Hans Jacob, eldest of 10 children of Hans Heinrich Landis and born in 4/13/1656. (The birth date given by Ira Landis is probably incorrect.)
