The last name comes from his father, Hans Bär ([[Bär-304]]) (who according to Best was BA51, was baptized July 4, 1612 in Hausen, Switzerland, died July 4, 1659 in Hausen and married, on November 16, 1634, Verena Huber ([[Huber-382]]), baptized October 15, 1615 in Mettmenstetten and buried March 28, 1676 in Hausen). This spelling was in use at least from early 1500s in Switzerland. Sometime in the early to mid 1700s it changed to Baer in Virginia, next it went to Bear and finally changed to Bare with David Bare who was born in 1785.[[Harrington-1886|Harrington-1886]] 16:01, 13 April 2016 (EDT)

It has been claimed that he immigrated to Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania Colony about 1710 [http://genforum.genealogy.com/bare/messages/642.html] and died there in 1717. According Jane Evans Best's work [[[#S163]] page: 17 Accessed 21, Jan., 2024 Text: died 1 July, 1715, Hausen Certainty of Data: 3] he died in Switzerland in 1715. I think it is unlikely that he returned to Switzerland to die. He supposedly married one Anna Thomasin in 1668 at Selbitz Stadt, Bayern, Germany. At this time I can find no supporting evidence of this event. The Gregorian calendar was instituted in 1582. This is the defacto calendar of the world at this time. It replaced the Julian calendar. The Julian calendar had a weakness concerning leap years. By the time the Gregorian calendar was adapted, the calendar was off by 10 days. Under the Julian calendar Jan 1 was the start of the year. However, by the seventh century, Annunciation Day had become the first day of the year. By the twelfth century this was also the rule in England. The Gregorian calendar had re instituted Jan 1 as the beginning of the year. The change was slow in adoption. It was not until 1752 that England had completely adopted the Gregorian calendar.
