John Hess died on 30 July 1831. He was buried in Hammer Creek Mennonite Church Cemetery, Lititz, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. His gravestone reads: "Zum Indenken von Johannas Hess. Geboren den 24ten September 1791, Starb den 30ten July 1831, Alt 39 Jahr, 10 monat und 6 tag." John Hess died intestate on 30 July 1831, leaving a widow, Elizabeth, and seven living children.
