family, mom
find her photo and bio on the google link given below.
Grandpa Hess' last sister died on May 28. she was 95 years. Her name is
Clara Hess. You will find her bio if you go to google for Clara Hess, Lancaster, PA. Jay and I had visited her in March when we were down there. She just died of old age, I think. She was a very special person I'll send you the eulogy that Allegra wrote which has very interesting info for the family stories as well. Also on one of the Lancaster link there was a genealogy Hess link that spoke of Magdalena Hess who with her husband Hans Hess crossed the ocean in 1717 with 6 small children etc. These were the originals to come to N. America You may find some info there that you do not have in the family tree.
Thanks for doing this. I need to learn how to put them in as well, I know

5-28-08 written by Allegra for Aunt Clara's funeral
Aunt Clara has always been a significant person in my life. We had a special bond. I was the first baby she helped deliver on the family farm where my parents lived and where she also lived with her mother and siblings. She would often remind me how I looked at birth, but dad was the one who gave me my name, because he thought I smiled that first day - "laughing Allegra" from Longfellow's poem.
Clara's life story has featured a courageous move out of her home to the Lancaster Medical Office of Dr. Lockey, where she learned the "med tech' skills, which defined her life-long career.
My sister shares that aunt Clara saved her from a lot of anguish. Aunt Clara had learned through her working with Dr. Lockey that the itching from poison ivy could be stopped on the spot by squeezing the juice of a popular Pennsylvania plant – jewel weed - on the infected part. It worked like a miracle, even for mosquito bites. She became a woman of knowledge from that time onward for Dorothy.
She took this career to Haiti, which fascinated and challenged me in several ways. She introduced us to real people who looked different from us and ministered to them with the Christian Gospel and also by educating them in lab technologies.
I began my own journey 4 years after high school, with the vague goal of being a "med tech" like Clara. I had to readjust my major to reflect my skill sets but her courageous, visionary, "trail blazing", high energy model inspired my career moves. My own Christian faith is best represented in my commitment to serve others.
At retirement, she returned to the geographical area/family where she continued to find creative avenues to serve the God she loved - in spite of career and age related health issues. Her varied interests, energy, and engaging personality were evident as she loved to challenge her visitors to a game of Scrabble - she always beat me!
Clara, you finally got the call you waited for so long - you are home at last. As I've often said to you, "I'll see you there". God be with you!
Love,
Allegra (her niece)
