== Biography ==
Tradition has it that when Christian Hershey's siblings (Benjamin, Andrew and Anna) and his father (also named Christian) immigrated to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, in about 1717, Christian remained behind in the Palatinate, in what is now Germany, and didn't join the rest of the family in America until 1739. A previous version of this profile stated that:
: Christian had to remain with the congregation to fulfill his duties to the church and came to Lancaster after the death of his father the Bishop Christian Hersche.
There was, in fact, a Christian Herschi who leased a farm in Freidelsheim, a small town 18 km west of Mannheim, Germany, and who was replaced as a tenant in 1739 by Christian Lichti.[Ellen Risser Farrell, ''Risser Families in the Palatinate and in America'', Pennsylvania Mennonite Heritage, Volume 10, Number 2 (April 1987), pages 21-31, citing page 22.]This is likely the same Christian Hirschi who arrived in Philadelphia from Rotterdam on 3 September 1739 aboard the ship ''Robert and Alice''.[Ralph Beaver Strassburger, edited by W. Christian Hershey's wife was named Esther. Some sources state that Christian Hershey married Maria, daughter of Christian Stoneman. This is likely based on a deed which says that "Christian Stoneman … died intestate leaving issue six children, to wit, … Maria the wife of Christian Hershey … " [1801 Deed: John Stoner to Christopher Brenner: [https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSF1-33W6-Q?i=260&cat=224489 Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, Deed Book 5H, page 45]. FamilySearch film #008067213, image 261 of 679.]But the reference must be to a different Christian Hershey because when Christian Stoneman died in about 1752, this Christian Hershey was long dead and so he couldn't be Maria's wife.

Christian was living in Manheim Township, Lancaster County, at the time of his death.
Christian Hershey was dead by 27 March 1745 when his will was probated. The will was written in German and so wasn't recorded with other wills in the Lancaster County will books. The will book does include basic probate information, though. His name was given as Christian Hirsha. The witnesses were Benjamin Hirsha and John Long.
