Ulrich Hernley is listed in the extant Tax Returns and Assessments for Rapho Township in 1751, 1756, 1757, 1759, 1769, 1771, 1772, 1773, 1775, & 1777. He is NOT listed in 1779, 1781, 1782, 1783, though there is a John and Christian listed in the Rapho Twp. Tax Assessments. He may have been listed by his first name (Johann/John), he may have died sometime between 1773-1779, or he may have turned over the operation of the farm to his son named John or Christian.
Looking specifically at the 1777 tax entry, there are three entries in the first list Nonassociation tax assessment, a tax on all persons who did not take an oath to support Congress after the Articles of Association [https://allthingsliberty.com/2023/04/how-pennsylvania-counties-paid-their-taxes-to-congress/ How Pennsylvania counties paid their taxes]. Taken in August of 1777, this was essentially a tax based head count; all Non-associators were assessed a tax of 3£-10s. The three listed are Woolery Horn, John Horn, and Christian Horn, suggesting all three were alive in Aug of 1777. Later that year in December, the property tax was assessed for state and county coffers. Only one of these is listed, John Harly who was assessed 4£-17s-2d for the state tax and 0£-11s-3d for the county tax. This suggests that Ulrich had died and that his son John, as one of the two executors, was named as property owner for tax purposes. Alternatively, John could mean Johann, Ulrich's birth name. In 1778, John Hernly is listed as a property owner for the Continental Tax; Christley Hernly is listed as a Freeman (no property, over 16 years?).

'''Abram Hernley''', a general farmer of Rapho township, resides in the family homestead where he was born, June 22, 1860. He is the son of '''Peter''' and '''Barbara (Hershey) Hernley''', who resided for many years on the same place.
Peter Hernley, the father, died June 7, 1892, and is buried in Hernley's Meeting House cemetery. The mother is still living at the age of seventy-five years, on a farm adjoining her son's place. There were born to Mr. and Mrs. Peter Hernley the following children: Anna, the wife of Samuel Snavely, a Rapho township farmer; Mary, widow of Abram Metzler, of Penn Township; Lizzie, wife of Henry R. Longenecker, of Penn township, near Limerock, died Sept. 9, 1897; and Abram, the subject of this sketch. Mr. Hernley's paternal grandparents were Peter and Elizabeth (Lehman) Hernley, who resided on the farm owned by their grandson, Abram. Peter Hernley died on the farm. He was a son of Christian Hernley, who, in turn, was the son of the pioneer of the family, Ulrich Horn, or Hernley, who emigrated from Switzerland and landed in Philadelphia Sept. 26, 1737. In 1759 this '''Ulrich Horn''', or '''Hernley''' as he was afterwards known, secured from the Penn family patents to 174 acres of the present Hernley homestead. He was a shoemaker by trade, going from house to house, and as he could not always return home by night, his family often stayed alone in their little house. This house was closed by a shutter on the outside, and by aid of a ladder Mrs. Hernley and the children crawled up, drawing the ladder up after them. Thus they would remain through the night, listening to the wolves howling around the hut. Downing town was the nearest place where the family could secure flour, and they were obliged to carry it all on horseback. He lived and died and is buried on the place which has ever since remained in the possession of the family. It will thus be seen that six generations of Hernleys have at different times owned the broad acres of the Homestead, taken up and settled upon by their great-great-great-grandfather. Abram Hernley's grandparents on his mother's side were Arbaham and Annie Hershey, of Lancaster county.
On Oct. 26, 1882, in Lancaster, Abram Hernley married Miss Lizzie Metzler. There have been born to this union the following children: Norah M., Minnie M., Barbara M., Peter M., Lizzie M., Martha M. and Esther M., all living at home with their parents. Mrs. Lizzie (Metzler) Hernley was born on the family homestead in Rapho township Aug. 5, 1862.
Abram Hernley has always lived on his present home, with the exception of ten years which he passed on an adjoining farm. At the time of his marriage he removed to the old place, and has since resided on it. Mr. Hernley is a Republican in politics, but the only office he ever filled was that of school director for a short term. He is thrifty in his habits and devotes his time to personal business affairs and has accumulated a fortune. With his family he is a member of the Mennonite church, and is well regarded in both religious and social circles for his moral character and pleasant ways.

=== From The Groff Book, Vol II ==="On July 26, 1738, Hans Groff and his wife Susanna granted 219 acres of land in Earl Township to their son, Mark Groff (E6) for (lb)20 and "love and affection." It also was part of the 1419 acres patented on November 18, 1737, and was near the land of Samuel Groff (E4) and Conrade Roodt. The 1758 Earl Township tax list shows Mark Grove owning 250 acres, including a saw mill.
The inventory of Marcus Groff (E6) was dated August 20, 1791 and totaled (lb)80.12.00. He dated his will May 18, 1779, and gave the 260 acres on which he lived to his only son, Marcus (E69), for which he was to pay (lb)1000 to his seven sisters and the husband of the eighth, at the rate of (lb)50 a year, divided into equal shares. Marcus (E6) provided well for his wife Anna and "my Brother-in-law Christian Huwer" during his lifetime. He added codicils on November 10, 1783, and December 6, 1784. The will was proved on November 2, 1791. Marcus Groff (E69) was also willed his father's smith tools.
Marcus Groff (E69) had six daughters and three sons. Marks Groff (E694) married his cousin Elizabeth Groff (E694) and moved to Canada in 1822. It was Christian Franz Groff (E6931) who compiled the 1867 chart of the descendants of Hans Groff (E). This chart proved to be an invaluable resource for this book."

An Ancestry profile for Hans states the couple had 17 children between 1695 and 1726; all but the first 6 were born in Pennsylvania (Note: not all children listed may have been from this couple, based on birth year and birth-place; research needed). Their 8th child was [[Bar-262|Barbara (Bar) Lionberger (abt.1713-abt.1785)]], probably born in or near Sinsheim where the family was thought to be living at the time she was likely born. According to Jane Evans Best, she married [[Leuenberger-40|Hans Ulli (Leuenberger) Lionberger (1710-bef.1757)]], who bought property from her father in Upper Leacock in 1740, and whose wife in his will was named Barbara.

==Research Notes==This profiled Jageli Bar, born December 30, 1683 in Hausen, should not be confused with [[Bar-177|Hans Jacob Bar]] who married [[Frederick-260|Barbara Frederick]] and settled on a large piece of land on the boundary between today's Upper Leacock and West Earl Townships, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He was also not the husband of [[Good-879|Fronica (Good) Bär (abt.1719-1774)]]. Her husband was Abraham Bär.
Jageli is included in Richard Warren Davis' 1999 book ''Emigrants, Refugees and Prisoners, Volume 3'', as part of his "Baer/Bahr/Bear Family A," the fourth child of [[Bär-305|Hans Bär (1648-1715)]]. He says that Hans "nor his children were ever called Anabaptists." Davis' entire entry regarding Jageli: "5184. Jageli Bar, b. 30 Dec 1683, Hausen. He was living at home at Oberalbis in 1709." These Bars were probably the sons of John Jacob Bar whose name was on the list of land transfers on the Conestoga in 1721. "Old Henry" Bar warranted 424 acres on the Conestoga river September 27, 1717. Jacob had 600 acres surveyed west of Hans Graeff the same month. Martin Bear was on the 1721 tax list. In 1671, a list of Anabaptists who had been exiled from Switzerland, and who had sought refuge in the Dirmstein region of the Pfaltz, included Thurs Abi (age 60), living in Ehrstadt with his wife, Margaret Steiner (age 62) and four children. The neighbouring household was occupied by Andreas Abi (age 40) and his wife Elsbeth Phadt, with eight children aged 1-18 years.[ It is assumed that Andreas was also a child of Durs and Margaret.]

----Reinhard von Hanau, was born about 1370, the second son of Ulrich IV, Herr von Hanau (Lord of Hanau) and his wife, Elisabeth von Wertheim.
Hanau unlike most German noble families, adopted the rule of primogeniture, where all lands were inherited by the eldest son, rather than having lands divided between all the sons. Younger sons in the family remained unmarried and most entered the church.[of the 5 younger sons, of Ulrich II, 4 entered the church, and one became a Knight of the Teutonic Order, none married, Suchier, p. 9] This seemed to be ratified under the Primogeniturstatut of 9 June 1343[Suchier, p. 9] which may have been restated in 1375.[Wikipedia.de]
Reinhard then was probably intended for the church, and was a student at the University of Bologna in 1387[Suchier, p. 12; Wikipedia.de]and possibly at the University of Heidelberg in 1390.[Wikipedia.de - though this might also have been his younger brother Johann] However in 1391 an ecclesiastical career was abandoned and Reinhard made a contract with his elder brother Ulrich V, where Reinhard would receive 400 florins a year and an interest in the towns of Partenstein, Rieneck, Bieber and Haßlau. If Ulrich V, still didn't have any sons, by 1401 then Reinhard would be allowed to marry.[Wikipedia.de]

Tradition has it that when Christian Hershey's siblings (Benjamin, Andrew and Anna) and his father (also named Christian) immigrated to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, in about 1717, Christian remained behind in the Palatinate, in what is now Germany, and didn't join the rest of the family in America until 1739. A previous version of this profile stated that:

Not much is known for certain about this Jacob Bär. Based on the order of the list of children on the emigration record, he may have been born roughly about 1714.
No records have been found yet in Pennsylvania that can be said definitively to be him.
However, he may have been the Jacob Bear who warranted two parcels of land in the northern part Manheim on May 28, 1743. [ See surveys A84-131 and A84-150, and Manheim Warrant map at https://www.phmc.state.pa.us/bah/dam/rg/di/r17-522WarranteeTwpMaps/r017Map2831LancasterManheimWeb.pdf.]This land is just to the northeast of where his parents lived in Upper Leacock. A Jacob Bare '''Jr.''' and wife Barbara sold most of this land to Abraham and Isaac Bare and Michael Sharer on October 5,1750 (maybe should read 1749 since those grantees then sold the land to Michael Meyer on January 4, 1750). Excepted out was a seven-acre parcel retained by Isaac Bear. [ Lancaster Deed A-245.] These men may have been his younger brothers and his brother-in-law, husband of his sister Magdalena. Abraham and Isaac have profiles at [[Bär-204|Abraham Bär (abt.1710-bef.1783)]], and [[Bear-209|Isaac Bear (abt.1720-1774)]], respectively. No profiles found for Michael Sharer or Magdalena Bear.
He may have been the John Jacob Bear who witnessed a deed on January 28, 1746 from [[Bär-204|Abraham Bär (abt.1710-bef.1783)]] for the land previously owned by his father Jacob in Upper Leacock. (Abraham was in possession of this land by June 10, 1741).[ See survey B8-125 and a warrant of this date to him on that survey. ] One of the other two witnesses to this deed was [[Bar-219|Samuel Bar (1705-1750)]], his brother.
He may have been the Jacob Bare for whom an Administrative Bond was signed on July 3, 1759 by Barbara Bare, Abraham Bare, Michael Sharer & Peter Eby (maybe [[Eby-1101|Peter Eby (1730-1794)]]). However, Jane Evans Best concluded that that was this profiled Jacob's father (whose wife was also Barbara).
==Research Notes==
There were a number of men named Jacob Bear who were acquiring land in the 1730s and 1740s in Lancaster County. A few of them settled on parcels near where this man's siblings appear to have settled, around today's Warwick, Clay and Elizabeth Townships. More research is needed.

The 1773 deed mentioned above, which was signed on 14 May, was an agreement among Benjamin Hershey's children. It stated clearly that their father was dead, and that he died intestate, leaving four children. The deed was recorded on 23 February 1784.
Another deed, written in German, complicates this picture. It was dated and recorded on 23 February 1784, the same day that the 1773 deed was recorded. Benjamin signed the 1784 deed, and was clearly still alive at that time. The deed confirmed the 1773 transfer of the two parcels to his son, Benjamin. In the deed, he stated that the 1773 transfer "was made with my complete consent and approval" (''welche Abtrettung und Übergebung durch meine völlig Einwilligung und Approbation geschehen ist''), and that the 1784 deed was made to clear up any objections to the 1773 deed. Since Benjamin didn't die in 1773, and was still alive in 1784, he was likely the Benjamin Hershey who died at his home near Lancaster on 29 July 1789. An obituary was printed a week later on 5 August 1789 in the German language newspaper ''Lancaster Zeitung''. He had been bedfast for the past five years owing to his great age. He came to this country from Germany in 1717, and he had lived on his farm since that time. He was one of the oldest inhabitants of this county. For more than fifty years he was a teacher and a worker in the vineyard of the Lord. He served the Mennonite congregation at all times with fidelity, and he will be remembered in blessing forever. He leaves a large number of descendants, and will be mourned by all who knew him.

The will was undated and unsigned so it wasn't recorded in the Chester County will books, but it was admitted to probate on the 8th day of the 6th month (August) in 1722. Later documents state that he died intestate. [The inventory of his estate was filed on 10 July 1723. An "explanation" of his will, written in English, mentions his "three children Bennadick Herse Andrew Herse Anna Herse." He sold the property on 5/11/1745. He then obtained a grant of land along with his brother Peter for 1100 acres in Augusta Co., Va. (now part of Page Co.)" - cited on
Hans John Leuenberger died in June 1757 on his plantation (over 2,000 acres!) near Little Hawksbill Creek, in what was then Augusta County (today: Page County), in the colony of Virginia. His will was proven in Frederick County, Virginia, in June 1757 and names his wife, Barbara, plus 8 children: sons, John, David & Peter; daughters, Elizabeth, Magdalena, Mary, Barbara & Ann Leuenberger. It indicates wife Barbara was still living. Will of Jacob Shelly.
Jacob Shelly's will written in German and signed with the mark JS was translated by Abraham Myer. In the will he refers to the land holdings of his sons Jacob, Jr. and Michael in Rapho Township and to those of his sons Christian and Abraham in Donegal Township. He also referred to "my brother Christian". The will dated May 18, 1752 was not admitted to probate. The two deeds referred to were part of the administration of the estate of Jacob Shelly. By these deeds Mary Shelly and Peter Bowman, her husband, acquired 147 acres of land patented to her father. The remaining 180 acres were transferred to Peter Shelly.

'''Hess Family.''' Samuel Hess emigrated from Zurich, Switzerland, to Pequea Twp. in Lancaster Co., PA, in 1712. He was a descendant of Hans Jakob Hess, an *anabaptist minister, who, according to the *Martyrs Mirror, suffered death from persecution in 1639. Samuels grandson John married Esther Hershey. Four generations later, descendants of this couple became Brethren at various points in E. Pennsylvania. Abram Hess married Caroline Myer from the Conestoga congregation, and descendants of their thirteen children are Brethren, with several ordained ministers. There are other Brethren who trace their lineage to the martyr through different lines. Other Brethren families are descendants of George Balser Hess who immigrated with his parents to N. America in 1751. He moved to Franklin Co., OH, in 1798; some of his children moved on to northern Indiana in 1829. Five of his grandchildren married into Brethren families in the mid-19th century: Daniel Hess (m. Esther Miller), Moses (m. Mary Beckner), Mary (m. Jacob Weybright), Martha (m. Her family were Mennonite Protestant Christians. As such they were subject to local discrimination, leading many to emigrate, seeking religious freedom.
In 1719, Barbara and Jacob Bar emigrated with their eight named children (Anna, Samuel, Veronica, Margaretha, Barbara, Jacob, Elisabeth and Magdelana) from Duhren in the northern Kraichgau, in what is now Germany. He is referred to in his emigration record as a Mennonite farmer. Another emigrant from Duhren in 1719 was [[Baer-367|Hans Michael Baer (abt.1686-bef.1741)]], probably her husband's brother, with his wife [[Ott-601|Anna Elizabeth (Ott) Baer (1692-1735)]] and children.[ Burgert, Annette Kunselman. In the 1649 census Annali Landis (age 66) is living with her son Hans Strickler; if age is correct, then her b. would be 1583. Census data is not always reliable-in 1633 her age of 60 means b. in 1573-not 1583. Only three Anabaptist Landis families in Horgen gave b. to ch. in the 1580s-Hans, Heini and Rudolph. Anna could be an unrecorded ch. of Heini, but Rudolph is the only Landis brother as parent in the 1570s.
