One camp has him born in 1553 or 1554, which is based on his age at death being 70 or 71. The other camp uses an exact birth date of 19 Apr 1553. More recent research by S. Michael Wilcox in 1995[https://www.lmhs.org/memberdb/PMH/PMH/1995-01.pdf Pennsylvania Mennonite Heritage - Volume XVIII, Number 1 - January 1995 - Pages 13 to 18 - Landis Families of Canton Zurich, Switzerland by S. Michael Wilcox] and Samuel E. Wenger in 2005)Samuel E. Wenger and Werner Baumann, A Combined Landis/Landes Genealogy Report of the Descendants of Hans Landis and Katharina Schinz (Akron, Pa.: 2005) have shown that this conflict results from the confusion of two brothers in the same family. One was named Hans, and the other was named Hans Heinrich at baptism. Hans (the Martyr) was never called Hans Heinrich as an adult. There was no exact birth date for him because the church books did not begin until 1546 and there is no record to tell us his birth name or birth date. Wilcox and Wenger use the year 1543 (or 1544) because someone (GAMEO and maybe also someone else) say he died in his 70th year (or at age 71). Although there is no birth record, I don't think there's anyone who thinks the Martyr's parents were other than Hans Landis and Katharina Schinz. On the other hand, we have an exact birth date for Hans Heinrich, son of these same parents, born 19 Apr 1553, and called Heini as an adult at the baptism of his 4 children. Wilcox provides the exact dates for Heini's children (and most others in his tree) and my examination of the original baptism records mirror the specific dates Wilcox uses. It's my feeling that some early researchers, when they could find no church record of a Martyr called Hans Landis, found instead the baptism of his brother Hans Heinrich. Michael Wilcox''' In 1589 fifteen men from Canton Zurich were imprisoned for their Anabaptist beliefs; among them were some whose descendants would later come to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. From Wadenswil came RudolphHofman, Walti Pfister, Rutsch Brupbach, Hans Pfister, Petter Hon, Walti Hess, and Jos Bruppach. From Horgen came Uli Sutter, Heini Landis, and Hans Landis . From Ebertswil came Gorius Weber. From Wetzwil came JacobHochstrasser. From Guldens came Uli Ertzinger. From Erlibach came Heinrich Bindschadler. From Surthal (Bernpirt) came Jagli Walti. The authorities reported on the responses of each of these men concerning their religious beliefs and activities. The following ones may be of interest to descendents of Hans Landis, the Anabaptist martyr who was beheaded on September 29, 1614. Hans Landis from Horgen reports. They alone are the signs for his soul. And he searched for the well-being of his soul. He will not turn away from it but stay with it. To take another stand is against his beliefs and he will not change. Heini Landis from Horgen does report that after they had met he made a statement to the people and never preached after that, but simply prayedtogether and stated they had done nothing to anyone. Yet he is not ready to listen to the church and speeches, for this is against his conscience, they will stay with it and continue with the New Testament which they understand. Uli Ertzinger from Guldinen side. He wants to be obedient to God and thinks that he and the others hope to have done good works. Jacob Hochstrasser from Wetzwyl does report. They have not done anything else but pray and hope that they have done good works. He is not ready to go to church, but will stay with his convictions. According to the 1589 reports some of the arrested men were fined, placed in the heretics tower, escaped or were released, but they remained faithful. | 283 | Alexander died after a farm accident at the age of 2 years old, the story goes: He was accidentally run over with a hay mower and his legs were cut off. The family rushed to teh local doctor who was known to be a drunk but a genius doctor. He told John Curtis to go out and kill a chicken and bring him the bones. He used them to make a splint for the legs of Alexander. The doctor didn’t finish the care after he had finished the operation. The family went to someone more sober and Alexander did not live. The Toronto Sick Kids Hospital contacted the family to see if they could get the body to use as a teaching aid because of the use of the chicken bones in fixing the legs . Anna was a guest at Brethren Village since 1988. Daughter of the late John B. and Annie Ginder Haldeman, her family home was in Mastersonville. After marriage, she moved and resided on Hess Rd., Leola where she helped to farm, and nurture six children. She did lots of sewing, crocheting, cooking, preserving, milking cows, and gardening. She was a long time member of the Conestoga Church of the Brethren, Leola, and the Willing Workers. Anna is survived by two sons, Elvin (Annie) Hess, of Willis Wharf, VA and Omar (Nancy) Hess of Leola; three daughters, Allegra Hess of W. Chicago, IL, Dorothy Hess of Claremont, CA, Marg (Jay) Strom of Guelph, ON, Canada; one daughter-in-law, Carol Hess of Ft. Wayne, IN; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; five brothers, Dave, Dan, Bob, Rufus, and Glen Haldeman; three sisters, Martha Elliott, Thelma Keener, and Joyce (Clarence) Lowe. She was preceded in death by a son, Bob Hess, and four brothers and sisters. Funeral services will be held at the Brethren Village Chapel, 3001 Lititz Pike, Lancaster, on Monday at 2:00 PM. Interment will be at the Eby Cemetery in Monterey, next to her husband. Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Heifer Project International, 1015 Louisiana St., Little Rock, AR 72202, or to the Brethren Village Good Samaritan Fund.
