The will was finally proved by a second witness on 10 February 1757. The will made provisions for Benjamin's children:[The will of Benjamin Weitmore: City of Philadelphia, Register of Wills, Book K, page 495 (Will number 314). FamilySearch film #007726374 , image 598 of 645.]

Their children, named in a deed dated 14 Dec 1779 were :

Fronica died before 1754.
Research Notes
Earlier version of profile included excerpts from The Groff Book, Volume 2 pp.80-81, 90-92 :
: Fronica Groff (E5) was married about 1731 and bore ten daughters by 1747. Her only son, Henry Landis (E5a), was married on March 26, 1771, and probably was born about the time of his mother's death, sometime between 1747 and 1754.
: On November 4, 1747, Henry Landis and his wife, Fronica Groff (E5), of Warwick Township, sold to her brother, David Groff (E9, was E0), 93 of the 94 acres that the heirs of Hans Groff (E) had deeded to them on July 30, 1746. By March 1, 1754, Henry Landis had married a second wife, Mary, widow of Jacob Shelley and mother of seven grown children, six sons and one daughter.
: The eleven children of Henry and Fronica Landis are named in a deed dated December 14, 1779. In this deed, 17 acres, part of the land in Warwick Township that Henry Landis patented July 24, 1741, was sold by one son-in-law, Jacob Alter and wife Margaret Groff (E59), to Peter Hall of Earl Township for (lb)7650, a handsome price for 17 acres. Freena Groff (E52), who was married to John Shrantz, was deceased without issue by December 14, 1779, when this deed was written. By the will of her father, Henry Landis, dated May 17, 1760, and proved in 1761, her share was added to that of her brother, Henry Landis (e5a).
Comments on the Groff Book :* Some discrepancies in list of children - see Elizabeth and Margaret, both b.1743.* Best cites deed Y-1-164 which can not be located at Lancaster County Recorder of Deeds* Best cites K-3-73 (signed 31 Mar 1798) in which Henry Landis is described as the eldest son of Henry Landis (dec'd) of the township of Manheim. By this deed the younger Henry, having attained the age of 21 years, releases his guardian Christian Erb. This younger Henry must have been born c.1777, and is presumed to be the son of Veronica's son Henry (1750-1791).* Assuming Best's account of the family to be correct, Veronica and Henry did not have a child named Abraham. Was there another couple named Veronica and Henry?
See comments (below) dated 20 Jan 2023 regarding earlier version of profile (now merged) which may indicate that two different women named Veronica Graff were present in the area at this time.

It is most probable that the last name Polier has been incorrectly spelt Bollier by misinterpretation of "B" by "P" during oral transcription; name may be recorded therefore as Bollier and Polier.
Of the ten children born to Magdalena [Bollier-23] Landis wife of Hans Heinrich [Landis-502] three died in early childhood: Oswald [Landis-513], the firstborn died at age 8 on 27 April 1641. Anna [Landes-511], the fifth-born died at age 3 on 13 May 1643. Hans Heinrich [Landis-509] died at age 3 on 30 November 1648. The two boys (Oswald and Hans Heinrich) who died were "replaced" in name by later-born siblings. It would follow that Anna probably would have been "replaced" had a girl baby been born after Anna's demise.

===Research Notes===* Hess family log home, Warwick Township. 1994 Warwick Township, Lancaster County, Pa. Physical Description: The Hess farmstead was first surveyed in 1730 as a 200-acre tract for Johannes Hess' grandfather, Hans Hess (ca. 1683-1733). This Hess patriarch immigrated to Pennsylvania in 1717 with his wife Magdalena (ca. 1680s-1767) and their children. The family emigrated from Germany or Switzerland. Hans and Magdalena are the first Hess immigrants known to arrive in America. Hans and Magdalena's oldest son Jacob Hess (c. 1706-1741) built the first house on this tract, circa 1730s, with wife Veronica. This Hess family received title to the farm from the William Penn family in 1735. The present log farmhouse was built ca. 1744 for Jacob's widow Veronica and their children. Their oldest son Johannes (1730-1778) was the next owner, with wife Susanna Landis Hess. In 1784 their eldest son Christian Hess (1757-1816) received this farmstead. Six years later, in 1790, Christian deeded this part of the farm to his brother, Mennonite Preacher John Hess (1768-1830), and wife Esther Hershey Hess. The next farmstead owners were John and Esther Hess' youngest son Henry Hess, and wife Catherine Huber Hess. Henry added the second storey to the log home in 1814 in preparation for his marriage to Catherine. In turn, their youngest son became the next owner, Mennonite preacher Jonas Hess, with wife Annie Franck Hess, followed by their son Henry F. Hess and wife Anna C. Shenk. The log home is located at 27 Lititz Run Road in Warwick Township. META CREA 2021-04-27 01:59:40.000 CLON TID 40325105. PID 19479499145. * John and Susanna lived and are buried on in the Old Hess Family Graveyard. John built the stone house in 1778 (it was under construction at the time of his death) but spent his last years in the log house. John's large inventory of Mar 5, 1778 included window glass, stone hammer and shoemaker tools. He and his eldest son, Christian (generation 4), paid a militia fine for not serving in the Revolutionary War. In 1775 John owned the bulk of the 200 original tract since he bought his younger bother's land when he (Christian) moved to Virginia. Susanna signed her name only with an X mark on legal papers.<br><br>It is said that John built a hemp mill about 1768 although already in 1758 John obtained the right to dam and utilize water from Carter's Run on land of George Klein, suggesting an earlier date.<br><br>Numerous records about John exist, including what is reported in the Will and estate settlement of his Uncle Christian Hess who died about 1794. In this Settlement record, Deed Records Lancaster Co., Pa. BK. "I", Vol. 3, Pgs. 30-31, nine children sign with their husbands for the share of Christian's estate bequested them as descendants of John. In addition, there are records of John's estate, orphans court, deeds, an inventory, etc.

• In the 1637 census of Stallikon, Martin Meili was called the “Anabaptist who allowed himself to be carried over by this wife”. On 3 May 1639 he and his brother Hans Jr. were imprisoned at Zürich in the former Oetenbach cloister.• Is he the same Martin MEILI who was with Hans MEILI and a Christian NEFF in Markirch (Upper Alsace)? If so: Martin MEILI emigrated into Upper Alsace (around Markirch, also called Ste-Marie-aux-Mines) in 1647. In 1649 he “secretly removed his child from a foster home designated by Zurich’s officials after theyd had broken up the MEILI estate at Knonau.” • 1650: “Die im Märtyrerspiegel wegen jahrelanger Haft im Kloster Oetenbach in Zürich erwähnten Familien Hans und Martin MEILI mit ihren Ehefrauen Anna und Barbara BÄR kamen als eine der ersten Täuferfamilien auf diesen Ruf der Freiherren von Venningen nach Dühren.”• To the Kraichgau, SE of Heidelberg, Germany: On 12 or 22 (Old vs. New Style calendar) January 1650 a permit was requested [from the Kurfürst of the Pfalz] by Hannibal von VENNINGEN and Georg Blenard von VENNINGEN, who owned devastated farm estates around Sinsheim, for Hans and Martin MEYLEN of Albis: Stallikon [and a BINGGELI or two] to settle at Dühren, near Sinsheim. This could be the two brothers Martin MEYLI b. 1607, d. after 2 March 1661, and Hans MEYLI Jr. b. 1614, d. after 2 March 1661 — or it could be Martin and his 17-year-old son Hans.• So by 1650 Martin had moved to Dühren in the Kurpfalz (Kraichgau, SE of Heidelberg) with his 2nd wife Anna BÄR, not too far from Ittlingen on the river Elsenz. In 1652 his brother Hans was recorded as living in Ittlingen.• In 1650 and in 1662 Martin was recorded as administering a farm owned by the Kurfürst of the Palatinate (Diefenbacher, Ortssippenbuch Dühren). This suggests that the von VENNINGEN brothers had recruited Swiss for both their own estates and those of the Kurfürst Karl Ludwig. https://web.archive.org/web/20070714194654/http://www.ocii.com/~fisher/neff/sprenger.htm • 1658 Martin MAYLE owned property in Dühren and was probably the man listed in the Register of Anabaptists as ‘Hans MAYLE’s son’, per the Sippenbuch developed on the early families of Dühren — individuals #1529 and #1530.• Martin was living there in Dühren [near Ittlingen, both on the river Elsenz] when he wrote the historical accounts of the persecutions in Switzerland. They appeared in the Martyr’s Mirror 1658 and later in the 1742 Ausbund. [Note: The Mennonite families at Markirch were later forced out by the French King Louis, about 1712, but were soon replaced by others from Switzerland.]• Dr. Elisabeth Kludas reports “Die im Märtyrerspiegel wegen jahrelanger Haft im Kloster Oetenbach in Zürich erwähnten Familien Hans und Martin MEILI mit ihren Ehefrauen Anna und Barbara BÄR kamen als eine der ersten Täuferfamilien auf diesen Ruf der Freiherren von VENNINGEN nach Dühren.” That is, Hans and Martin MEYLI, mentioned in the Märtyrerspiegel as having spent years imprisoned in the Klost Oetenbach in Zurich, arrived in Dühren [in the Kraichgau] with their wives Anna and Barbara BÄR among the first Anabaptist families recruited by the Lords von VENNINGEN. The von VENNINGEN at that time still ruled their own lands, although these were nominally held as fiefs from the Kurfürst of the Pfalz.• Some sources say The Sippenbuch of Dühren shows Martin MAYLE holding property there in 1658. A man of this name also appeared about 1661 in the registry of Anabaptists in Dühren. MEYLI died 1658, but if he was still administering a farm owned by the Kurfürst in 1662, use that date. ‘Martin MEILI’s son’ was among the Mennonites caught having a meeting in a cellar at Steinsfurt 2 Mar 1661 – could be Jacob or Peter.

Died YoungAnna was born in 1639. She was the daughter of Hans Landis and Magdalena Bollier. She passed away in 1643.
At the dedication of baby Anna, the sponsors were: Osli Baumann and Anna Suter. The home/farm was Moosacher, Hirzel. Anna is listed or identified in the Samuel Wenger book as 1.3.4a.8.5 Working back in time thus she was the fifth child born of the eighth-born of the first wife of the 4th child of the of the 3rd child of Johannes [Landis-132] and Katharina [Schinz-2]. Anna or Klianna (little Anna) died as a toddler on 13 May 1642. Cause of death not recorded.
A census record of 1633 lists: 1633 Hirzel census for Moosacher shows Oswald Landis(60) and his son Hans Heinrich(22), with his wife Magdalena Bollier (23) and son Oswald. A census record of 1643 lists: 1643 Hirzel census for Moosacher shows Hans Heinrich Landis and his wife Magdalena Bollier (Anabaptists in exile) and 5 children – Vereneli(10), Barbli(7), Gredi(5), Hans Heinrich(2) and Osli(1/2). {Anna is not included as she was born and died between the two census report dates.}

== Biography == Cathrina Meylin, born c.1612, daughter of Hans Meylin, the "Täuffer", married Johann Heinrich Funk (son of Jacob Funk of Ober Mettmenstetten) at Mettmenstetten on 20 Aug 1634. They were the parents of fourteen children baptised at Mettmenstetten between 1635 and 1653; it is likely that three of these were the individuals recorded as absent from the parish and "serving with the Anabaptists in the Palatinate" in 1661. [Best, Jane Evans (1989). "Swiss Emigrants from Albis, Part II : Rifferswil and Mettmenstetten" in Mennonite Family History Vol. VIII, No. 2, p.54. Elverson, PA : Mennonite Family History.] Their children are identified as :
# Anna b.c.1635 # Jacob b.c.1636 m. (1) Barbara Groh (2) Anna Ringer
# Heinrich Funk b.c.1638
# Hans Heinrich b.c.1639
# Heinrich b.c.1641
# Rudolph b.c.1642 m. Elsbeth Scharrer # Heinrich b.c.1643 m. Fronica (emigrated to Pennsylvania)
# Verena (c.1644 - 1647)
# Oswald (c.1645 - 1646)
# Elsbeth b.c.1648
# Hans Jacob b.c.1650 m. Verena Ringer
# Cathrina b.c.1651
# Anna b.c.1652
# Margaretha b.c.1653
It's believed that, between 1645 and 1647, Hans and Catherine also cared for Elisabeth and Verena Meylin, the daughters of Martin Meylin and Barbara Bär who were then imprisoned under coercion to renounce their faith.
Catherine died on 9 Apr 1681 in Ober Mettmenstetten.
==Research Notes==* Earlier version of profile recorded Catherine's death in Affoltern am Albis, without giving sources. Place of death has been amended here to be consistent with source.
* Kathrina and Heinrich had five children. At the death of Heinrich in 1666 the children ranged in age from the oldest age 31 (Anna) to 13 (Margaretha). The other three children were boys ranging in age from 30 (Jacob), 29 (Rudolph) and 28 (Heinrich). The boys had left home; Anna was married and had children of her own. Thus Kathrina and her 13-year-old daughter, Margaretha were alone. In 1668 the widow Katherine, then age 56, married Wendell Santman, then age 55. Nothing has been found about Wendell’s parentage or family. According to the legend, Wendell since their childhood had maintained a warm friendship with Kathrina and Heinrich. When Heinrich died, Wendell stepped in to help Kathrina. Two years later he became a full-time helpmate to Kathrina and a step-father figure to Margaretha. Twelve years later in 1680, Kathrina’s health began to deteriorate and then her condition markedly worsened until her death in 1681. Wendell proved to be a kind and devoted caregiver at the end of Kathrina's life.
* Thus he was well respected and liked by Anna and her sister Margaretha who by 1680 was age 27 and still at home also caring for her mother. Kathrina's daughter, Anna Meili Funck-115 Bauman, as shown on her entry, died as a result of childbirth of her fifth child. Her mother, Kathrina, was very ill at the same time and Anna knew she, too, was about to die. Anna knew that her newborn was a boy. She asked those attending her deathbed that the boy's first name be Wendel. She wanted Wendell Santman to know how much the family appreciated his kindness and knew he was childless and would cherish her request that her baby is named after him.
* Anna in other biographies has been given the surname of Santmann, but at age 33 and already married, there would have been no reason that she would have taken on the last name of Santmann her step-father.
* Conflicts with Best (1989) who reports 14 children born to Catherine and Heinrich.
* Downey-1809: Several Cathrina Meili found on Ancestry International but no clear matches.

== Biography == David Groff was the youngest son of Hans Groff, the Swiss pioneer, and his wife Susanna Kendig, born about 1722. Some sources indicate birthdate as July 1, 1720.
Place of birth has been listed as either Germantown, PA or Earl Twp, Lancaster Co PA. Since Hans Graff had purchased land in Earl Twp in 1717, I have listed the place of birth of David as Earl Twp, Lancaster Co, PA.
David's father Hans Graff was born about 1661 in Switzerland and came to Germantown, PA in 1696. Within the next few years Hans became a man of wealth and prominence. Hans died in 1746, his will was proved May 7, 1746. In his will, Hans left a plantation or equivalent of a plantation to each of his 10 children. Global Anabaptist Mennonite Encyclopedia Online
The family were Mennonites. The Groffdale church was built on this farm in 1755, the center of a thriving congregation. Hans's sons Peter and David, his son-in-law Henry Landis, together with Hans's brother Martin (d. 1760) as minister, formed the nucleus of this Mennonite community. The first-known bishop of this congregation, Christian Burkholder, married a granddaughter of Hans Groff. Hans and his son David furnished the meeting place for the congregation in the early days in their homes.[The Groff Book, Volume 2, page 83.]
David was listed as a distiller in the 1758 Earl Twp, Lancaster County lists with 275 acres at the time.

Died 17 Nov 1784, Earl Twp, Lancaster Co, PA
Lancaster Co Orphans Court Record of June 8, 1785 refers to the son of David Groff who died a few months before David Groff senior. The Barbara Graff mentioned as an heir to David Groff in 1785 was the daughter of David Groff Jr and not the Barbara Groff who married Christian Binkley.
Buried in Groffdale Mennonite Brick Church Cemetery, Leola, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, USA [Find a Grave, database and images (https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/69998449/david-graff: accessed 05 July 2023), memorial page for David Graff (1721–17 Nov 1784), 69998449, citing Groffdale Mennonite Brick Church Cemetery, Leola, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, USA; Maintained by roots56 (contributor 47495118).]
Will
David wrote his will 22 Sep 1783 and it was probated 23 Nov 1784. In his will he lists his heirs including the children of his daughter Barbara Binkley, late the wife of Christian Binkley. The children of Barbara Binkely are listed as David and Barbara Binkley. David’s wife Barbara and friend David Martin were listed as executors.["Pennsylvania Probate Records, 1683-1994," images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QSQ-G99B-VVM3?cc=1999196&wc=9PM8-7MQ%3A268493801%2C268532101 : 3 July 2014), Lancaster > Wills 1784-1796 vol E-F > image 70 of 586; county courthouses, Pennsylvania.]
References wife Barbara. David's children mentioned in Will are John, David, Ann and Barbara. Both Ann (m. Jacob Erb) and Barbara (m. Christian Binckly) were already deceased at the time of writing, so their inheritances were specified as given to their children, David and John Erb, and David and Barbara Binckly. Barbara (David's wife) and David Martin were named executors, and the will was written September 22, 1783. Witnessed by Mark Martin and Mark Grove. Proved November 24, 1784.
===Family Bible===Hans Groff had brought with him from Europe the 1580 Froschauer Bible. Levi W. Groff, the great grandson of David Groff, inserted a five page statement in the bible in 1892. In it he described the family of Hans Groff and of his great grandfather David Groff.[Statement of Levi W. Groff, dated 4 Jul 1876, in Mennonite Research Journal, Jul 1970, p 28]

== Notes on Proposed Merge ==Some notes on birth/death dates and other information, for consideration for potential merge with Groff-364.
=== Birth Date ===The only source in this profile that is not simply someone's (unpublished) family tree is the Sons of the Revolutionary War application source. Looking on Ancestry.com by the SAR Membership number 72737, I could not find the record referenced. Moreover, I found another SAR Application with the birth year of 1697 crossed out in favor of "C. 1717".[SAR membership ID 89142] The only source I have seen with the 1697 date is the Lancaster Mennonite Vital Records, however I have found these records in general to be not very reliable (the same index card with the 1697 date lists John's wife Elizabeth Carpenter as the daughter of Emanuel, has six of the original eleven children listed for John Groff and Elizabeth Carpenter crossed out by hand, and has other hand-made corrections for dates, for example). I therefore do not consider the 1697 date to have a real source. The 1697 birth date also conflicts substantially with all sources on the life of Hans Graf, which hold that Jacob was his oldest son and the only son by his first wife. John is one of his younger children.
=== Death Date ===Years for John's death that I've seen are 1780, 1788 and 1797. 1780 has appeared on SAR applications, and also in "North America, Family Histories" which I believe is a compilation of lineages from Daughters of the American Revolution applications.[p. 171, "Lineage Book : NSDAR : Volume 142 : 1918". Ancestry.com. North America, Family Histories, 1500-2000 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations, Inc., 2016.Original data:]. The FindAGrave entry has 1788 even while including a picture of the gravestone with the 1797 date. The gravestone and Groff Book, Vol 2, cite the 1797 date, and there is a will that fits that date as well as the correct children's names. It seems to me that the most reliable sources all support the 1797 date and do not suggest that the John Groff who is the son of Hans Graf and Susanna (Kendig? Orndorf?) have death dates of 1780 or 1788. There is moreover a will associated with the 1797 date (written in 1787, perhaps explaining how some sources got to 1788).["Maryland Register of Wills Records, 1629-1999," images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33SQ-GT15-96VK?cc=1803986&wc=SNYC-FM3%3A146535301%2C147314001 : 20 May 2014), Frederick > Wills 1794-1803 vol 3 > image 95 of 332; Hall of Records, Annapolis.]
=== Marriage(s) ===Sources seem pretty consistent that John married a daughter of Henry Carpenter, and also married an Elizabeth. The Groff Book has these as separate wives, while other sources assume they were one and the same, an Elizabeth Carpenter, or perhaps hold that he married first an Elizabeth Carpenter and then later another Elizabeth. I do not believe we need to sort out for certain the truth of these marriages before merging these profiles.
=== Conclusion ===There are many other John Groffs in the vicinity of Lancaster PA around this time, and there may be one with some of these other birth/death dates. But I believe we can be fairly assume that the most likely dates for the son of the Hans Graf attached as father to this profile are (ca. 1715 - 1797), and merge this profile with Groff-364.

Pages 120-121. ] The earliest records found by Newman & Newman for him were in StAB, Affoltern im Emmenthal Church Book on 17 March 1733, and in the StAB, Sumiswald Church Book, on 20 April 1643, when he appeared as Tauf Zeugen.
1st Marriage and Children: He married, about 1630, probably in Oberkneubuhl, BE CH, Elsbeth Aeschelman, born c. 1611, probably in Ruegsau, BE, CH. They were the parents of at least four children, born between about 1631 and 1643. [Newman & Newman.] [ Their children included :]
# Andreas b.c.1631, died after May 25, 1683.
2nd Marriage: Durs married Margaret Steiner. They are not known to have had any children. She died after July 15, 1681, probably in Trachselwald. [Newman & Newman.]
In 1671 or maybe April 6, 1672, a list of Anabaptists who had been exiled from Switzerland, and who had sought refuge in the Dirmstein region of the Pfaltz, included Thurs Abi (age 60), living in Ehrstadt with his wife, Margaret Steiner (age 62) and four children. The neighbouring household was occupied by Andreas Abi (age 40) and his wife Elsbeth Phadt, with eight children aged 1-18 years.[ It is assumed that Andreas was a child of Durs and Margaret.]
Durs is reported to have returned to Switzerland, and to have been captured several times, imprisoned at least once (for 16 days in 1679) and to have been exiled again. By 1681 he was living in Emmenthal.
The last record found for him:
The last note on Durs Aebi in Bernese records is an entry in the council manual of May 26, 1684, according to which, among others, the "aged and lame Aebi from Emmental" had escaped from the orphanage. Once again the order went out to the Grossweibel to investigate how this could have happened and who was the one who helped the Anabaptists to escape.[ Website Paths to Freedom - Durs Aebi and Margret Steiner from Sumiswald, at https://wege-zur-freiheit.ch/en/verfolgt-und-vertrieben/durs-aebi-und-margret-steiner, citing StABE, A II 511, 408f.]
Newman and Newman state that he died after May 26, 1684, probably in Trachselwald.
Research Notes
There appear to have been several men of this name in the area at the time. Care needed to ensure they have not been confused or conflated.
Earlier version of the profile recorded :* He may be the Ursus (Durs, for Dorus) AEBI, b. 5 Mar 1610, recorded at Oberbuchsiten as son of Johannes AEBI, b. c1579 and Elisabeth WAGNER. A man of this name appears also at Barschwil in the 1630s, where he married first Verena GROLLIN and 2nd Maria KARN about 1640. The Newmans give his wife only as Margreth STEINER. Richard Davis in Mennosearch in 2010 lists a dozen families of AEBIs at Oberbuchsiten, Solothurn, during the 1600s. Solothurn is N of Bern, toward Basel. [A man of this name also appears in parish burial records in Oberbuchsiten in 1636,["Schweiz, Katholische und Reformiert Kirchenbücher, 1418-1996", database, FamilySearch (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:6F8Q-YT75 : 5 April 2023), Ursus Aebi, 1636.] and another in 1643.["Schweiz, Katholische und Reformiert Kirchenbücher, 1418-1996", database, FamilySearch (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:6F8Q-YTDJ : 5 April 2023), Ursus Abÿ, 1643.] There does not seem to be any reason to assume that Ursus b.1610 left Oberbuchsiten.]* Some sources suggest that "The man in Ehrstädt is probably Durss AEBI of 'a village north of the Emmental', a Catholic priest who was excommunicated in 1666 for teaching Anabaptist ideas. By 1670 he was a teacher himself among the Anabaptists."[Ruth, John Landis (2001). "The Earth Is the Lord’s : A Narrative History of the Lancaster Mennonite Conference" in Studies in Anabaptist and Mennonite History, No. 39, p.108. Scottsdale, PA: Herald.] Also cited in "the Eby Report", Durst AEBI was from Oberbuchsiten, Solothurn, Switzerland and was a Catholic Priest at Barschwil up until he was excommunicated in 1666 and became an Anabaptist minister. [This seems unlikely, given that he apparently had children born in the 1640's.]* 6 Apr 1672 Thoirs ÄBJ was recorded as age 60, his wife Margriet STEINER 62, at Ehrstädt when the Holland Mennonites listed those who needed help in the Kraichgau. They had 4 children with them, married. It is probable that they were in Germany prior to 14 Dec 1671, when they were listed in an enumeration of Anabaptists in the Pfalz. The next family listed was Andries ÄBJ age 40 with wife Lysbet PLADT and 8 children aged 18 to 1 year. [Note this text had referenced Davis (1994) in Mennonite Family History, but that document names Thors Abi (age 60, with wife Margaret Steiner and four children) in the 1671 list, and does not include them in the 1672 list.] Theodor Blück says this Thoers ÄBJ was on land owned by the Von DEGENFELD family and that he was the uncle of the Durst EBY who emigrated to American and died Sept 1727 in Earl Tp. [Note other sources give that Dors was the grandfather, not uncle, of Durst Eby who emigrated to Pennsylvania.] * Durss AEBI and his family were expelled from Switzerland in 1672 and their property confiscated. After 7 years in the Kraichgau, Durss and Margaretha returned to Switzerland. He was hunted as an Anabaptist leader. Davis says he has found no further trace of Durs & Margretha but the Newmans say he is shown in Bern records after having returned there some time after 14 May 1679, per Trachselwald District Accounting records. In 1683 his son Andreas wrote to the Swiss authorities trying to get back the confiscated estate, and the reply to his letter states that his father Durss AEBI is still alive and living in the orphanage at Trachselwald. (Source needed.)* Davis on MennoSearch says : He was chased out of the country several times by the government because he was an Anabaptist. He was for part of the following years in prison; 1670, 1671, 1679, 1680, 1681, 1682, 1683 and 1684. He was listed as a Swiss Anabaptist refugee living at Ehrstadt, Baden, Germany, age about 60 with his wife Margaret STEINER, age 62. It stated that they had four children, married. His son Andreas was listed next to him. He signed a letter in 1672 in the Pfalz as one of the ministers of the west side of the Rhine River. [Document Nr. 117: Mennonite Church Archives in the Amsterdam Municipal Archives, inv. nr. 1411 (written 2/12 February 1672, received 19 February). Letter from the Swiss clergy - Ully SEYLLER, D. ABI, Ully MULER, Peter GUTT, Georg LIECHTE, Hans REYST, Hans WEINMETS, Kristen HER, and Jost ÜNGEL [ENGEL?].]
