I cannot find reference to this location, but there is a canton of Zürich called Hedingen, so I am assuming that this is the correct place of birth. All seem to agree that she was born about 1608. Margaret Schneveli was the first wife of Oswald B. Landis. Together they had 12 children the last born in 1620. Margaret died in 1627. Oswald married Anna Schappi in 1628. Anna died in 1640. After her death, Oswald married Catharina Bruppacher in 1643. No record of any children with Anna or Catharina. Catharina may have been his cousin or she could have been a much younger sister of Oswald's mother i.e. his aunt. In the 1756 tax roll for Manor Township, Lancaster County, Jacob's name no longer appeared, but was replaced by "Widow Moser." With several young children to care for, Maria didn't waste any time after Jacob's death before marrying her second husband, [[Mellinger-139|Benedict Mellinger]]. The marriage took place on 31 October 1756. On 27 September 1785, after Maria's death, the 100-acre tract in Warwick (previously Hempfield) Township that she purchased from her brother in 1759 was sold to Jacob Hostetter of Warwick Township. Three deeds were created to make the transfer.

In 1759, when Maria Hershey purchased land from Christian and Barbara Hershey, [ she was married to Benedict Mellinger, yet the deed referred to her as a spinster. She married Benedict, her second husband, on 31 October 1756, and she was still married to him when she died in about 1785. Several theories have been proposed to explain this discrepancy:]
# The word 'spinster' was mistakenly inserted, either in the original deed or by the scribe who copied the deed into the Lancaster County Deed Book. This seems unlikely because it would have been unusual at that time for a married woman, rather than her husband, to purchase land.# The wrong date was inserted by the scribe who copied the deed, and the deed was actually signed before 1748, when Maria was still a spinster. This seems unlikely because several 1785 deeds refer to the earlier deed (for example, "Christian Hershey and Barbara his wife by his Indenture bearing Date the 4th Day of July 1759 …" [), and if there had been a discrepancy in the dates, someone would have likely noticed it at that time.# The Maria Hershey who married Jacob Musser and Benedict Mellinger was not this Maria Hershey, but her niece, [[Hershey-547|Maria Hershey]], daughter of Christian Hershey and Barbara Hostetter. ][Edgar A. Susanna Kendig came with husband Hans GRAFF to America; they arrived by 1704 (13 years before her parents came), lived first in Germantown until 1715 when they moved to Lancaster County. However, Susanna has been reported through family tradition as having been a domestic servant to Hans in Germantown, Pennsylvania. Husband Hans GRAFF's will was probated 5 May 1746 in Earl Twp, Lancaster Co, PA. Since she was named executor of his estate, she must have died after 24 Jun 1748 (see Wenger & Grider books); is the 1748 date in Groffsdale really her?]

• She was called Annali. She was both the sister and a cousin to Oswald BÄR Jr.• In 1637 she was recorded as an Anabaptist; 1638 and 1642 she was in prison, where she bore one of her sons. A report on her hearings there was made 1 Sep 2007 at a meeting on “Täuferinnen und Mennonitinnen” by Astrid von Schlachta.• 2nd wife; she had 5 children with Martin MEYLI. In 1650 they moved to Dühren in Baden, which belonged to the Freiherren von VENNINGEN. • Richard Davis reports that Annali in 1668 appeared in the estate papers of her uncle Hans Jakob BÄR, where she is called an Anapaptistin in the Pfalz and wife of Martin MEILI.
The Woman Who Had a Baby in Jail
In 1637 they caught the minister, [[Meili-14|Hans Meyli]], of the Horgerberg, in the snowcrowned Alps south of Lake Zürich in Switzerland. They tried him and threw him into the Oetenbach castle dungeon, but after forty-three weeks he escaped. The Protestant authorities (of Zwingli's reformed church) were furious. They did continual house searches and harrassed the believers. Thirty Täuferjäger (Anabaptist hunters) found out where the Meylis lived and with bare swords and firearms stormed the house, hacking through doors and throwing things around to find the escaped minister. They cursed and swore and blasphemed God. When they realized that he was not there, they took his two sons, [[Meili-16|Hans Jr.]] and [[Meili-19|Martin Meyli]] captive.
Martin was already married. They grabbed his young wife and tied her up tightly. Her name was [[Bar-135|Anna]]. She had a fourteen-week-old baby, which they took from her and gave to people from the state church to keep. They took the captives to Zürich, tried them and locked them up in the Oetenbach castle dungeons. They took off the men's clothes and chained them to the stone floor for twenty weeks. They tortured them with spiders and caterpillars. They gave them just enough food and water to keep them alive. But the prisoners would not recant. After one year the two men escaped "with undamaged consciences" and after two years, on Good Friday, 1641, Anna escaped as well. They fled from place to place, but the people betrayed them. Anna fell into the hands of the Täuferjäger again and was imprisoned, first at the Oetenbach, then in the Spital jail. This time she was expecting a baby. They left her shackled until the pains of labour came upon her. Then they loosened her to have the baby, and "with the help and grace of God" she escaped. The Woman Who Had a Baby in Jail
In 1637 they caught the minister, [[Meili-14|Hans Meyli]], of the Horgerberg, in the snowcrowned Alps south of Lake Zürich in Switzerland. They tried him and threw him into the Oetenbach castle dungeon, but after forty-three weeks he escaped. The Protestant authorities (of Zwingli's reformed church) were furious. They did continual house searches and harrassed the believers. Thirty Täuferjäger (Anabaptist hunters) found out where the Meylis lived and with bare swords and firearms stormed the house, hacking through doors and throwing things around to find the escaped minister. They cursed and swore and blasphemed God. When they realized that he was not there, they took his two sons, [[Meili-16|Hans Jr.]] and [[Meili-19|Martin Meyli]] captive.
Martin was already married. They grabbed his young wife and tied her up tightly. Her name was [[Bar-135|Anna]]. She had a fourteen-week-old baby, which they took from her and gave to people from the state church to keep. They took the captives to Zürich, tried them and locked them up in the Oetenbach castle dungeons. They took off the men's clothes and chained them to the stone floor for twenty weeks. They tortured them with spiders and caterpillars. They gave them just enough food and water to keep them alive. But the prisoners would not recant. After one year the two men escaped "with undamaged consciences" and after two years, on Good Friday, 1641, Anna escaped as well. They fled from place to place, but the people betrayed them. Anna fell into the hands of the Täuferjäger again and was imprisoned, first at the Oetenbach, then in the Spital jail. This time she was expecting a baby. They left her shackled until the pains of labour came upon her. Then they loosened her to have the baby, and "with the help and grace of God" she escaped. Ulrich and Elsbeth had several children, but only Katherine's name was known to or remembered via handwritten notes by my Grandma Willa Augusta [[Rusmisel-2]] as she recalled this family history. So clearly this is not sourced by any document other than notes transcribed to a very early edition of Family Tree Maker.The last name of Meili is the more common spelling of this family than the phonetic Meyli.

According to Best (probably correctly), he was also the man who witnessed a deed from [[Baer-293|Abraham Baer (abt.1710-bef.1783)]] for land in Upper Leacock on January 28, 1746. One of the other two witnesses to this deed was John Jacob Bear (possibly his brother; see profile at [[Bar-217|Jacob Bar (abt.1714-)]]). The relationships between these three men has not been established for certain, but it seems likely that all three men were brothers.
According to Davis: in 1742, he was called Samuel Beer, widower at the Pequea, when he married Miss Barbara Snebli of Leacock Township, at the First Reformed Church at Lancaster. He was living "at the Peque," which would indicate that he was probably living at Conestoga Towonship at the time of his marriage. [See also Hinke, William J. Best concluded in “Bear Saga Update: Part Two” that he was the father of [[Bare-918|Samuel (Bare) Bear (1731-1788)]], but she doesn’t explain the rationale. On May 12, 1768, one Samuel Bear and wife Margaret mortgaged a 1-acre parcel that appears to be a portion of land in Manheim warranted by Jacob Bare (probably [[Bar-217|Jacob Bar (abt.1714-)]]) in 1743. [See Lancaster Deed M-426.][ See also Surveys A84-131 and A84-150.]
On March 26, 1746 Samuel warranted 40 acres in what is today Bethel Township, Lebanon County, "adjacent to his other land." He still owned the land on December 4, 1750, but did not patent it. [ Survey H-258 at https://www.phmc.state.pa.us/bah/dam/rg/di/r17-114CopiedSurveyBooks/Books%20A%20-%20Z/Book%20H/Book%20H%20pg%20524.pdf.]That parcel, together with other land warranted two years later by [[Groh-139|Peter Groh (abt.1720-bef.1769)]], was patented much later, in the 1800s. Davis ascribes various tax records to him and suggests that he died after 1763 as a renter in Lancaster Borough. He gives him seven children (including Samuel), three of them tentative. There is more information about him in Davis' book.

This spelling was in use at least from early 1500s in Switzerland. The Gregorian calendar was instituted in 1582. This is the defacto calendar of the world at this time. It replaced the Julian calendar. The Julian calendar had a weakness concerning leap years. By the time the Gregorian calendar was adapted, the calendar was off by 10 days. Under the Julian calendar Jan 1 was the start of the year. However, by the seventh century, Annunciation Day had become the first day of the year. By the twelfth century this was also the rule in England. Both Joseph and Durst (Dorst in Probate Record) wrote their Wills in German, and were not copied into the Probate Record, but were used to grant Letters of Administration. Joseph Benjamin Landis and Jason Musson as his witnesses, Durst had Jacob Landis and Abraham Duner as his witnesses, Executors were Francis Buckwalter, John Witmer and Jacob Hartman. With Joseph dying in 1748, could Durst be her second husband? Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society has a copy of the German Wills in their Collection.
There two Barbara Landis'. ? Joseph was appointed executor of Felix Landis Will - " Lastly I constitute and appoint Joseph Buckwalter and Michael Donner, my trusty and well beloved friends, as my sole and whole executors of this my last Will and Testament. In token whereof I do Hereby ratify the same by settling my hand and seal hereunto this 29th of April 1737."
The following is a case of someone confusing 2 Barbara Landis'; our genealogy still stands. Kay Wilson was kind enough to doublecheck the below mentioned version, and while there was some confusion, Theodorus Durst Buckwalter and his wife, Barbara Landis, are STILL in the book, also.

On January 28, 1746, Abraham and his wife Frena ([[Good-879|Fronica (Good) Bär (abt.1719-1774)]]) sold some of his land to Henry Bear, who has a profile at [[Bar-202|Heinrich (Bar) Baer (1715-1771)]]. Abraham moved to Manchester, York County sometime before he wrote his will there on August 13, 1774. In it, he is called Abraham Bear. He names his wife Fronica and six children Jacob, John, Henry, Samuel, Mary, the wife of John Fetter, and Barbara wife of Isaac Sittler. Henry appears to have been the eldest son as he is given an additional share. Samuel is not to receive his share for seven years, mention is made for his schooling, and his brother John appointed his guardian, so he must have still been a minor. The executors were his wife Fronica and son John Bear. He patented 450 acres in Leacock Township on 21 Apr 1742 which had been originally 600 acres surveyed by his father Jacob in Jun 1721. The land was next to Henry Carpenter and John Line. He sold 149 acres of this land to his younger brother Henry on 28 Jan 1746 with the witnesses to the deed being Samuel Bear, John Jacob Bear and Sebastian Conyard. He sold 232 acres of the land with his wife Frena to David Bear in January 1747. He warranted 112 acres in Leacock Township on 11 Jan 1749 and it was patented to him. He and his wife Frena, Michael Sharer and his wife Magdalena and Isaac Bear and his wife Barbara sold 137 acres in Manheim Township to Michael Meyer on 4 Jan 1751. On 1 Apr. 1756 he and his wife sold to Christian Carpenter 97 acres (which was granted 13 Jan 1749 to him) next to Christian Carpenter's land in Earl Township but which was called Leacock Township when they sold to James Hamilton of Philadelphia 113 acres next to Casper Walters and Henry Carpenter (land which was granted to Abraham on 11 Jan 1749). A very timely question is how were the four husbands of the four daughters of John (Hans) Good related. We can safely say that they were brothers-in-law. There is little ground to my knowledge by which closer kinship can be established. Abraham by reason of related evidence available was quite certainly a son of "600 acre Jacob" for whom the original survey in June 1721 was made. The identity of David I have not established. Unfortunately in the centuries since 1720 numerous records may have become lost or mislaid. There is also some doubt as to where John Bear who married Catharine Good finally had his residence. The following information is included because [[Bar-202|Heinrich (Bar) Baer (1715-1771)]] MAY actually be yet another son of Jacob Bar and Barbara Frederick, and a younger brother of this profiled Abraham (and his birthdate may be somewhat later than thought). Additional research and analysis is needed.
According to Willis N. Baer, [[Bar-202|Heinrich (Bar) Baer (1715-1771)]] was from a branch of the Baer family that is unrelated or only distantly related to [[Bar-177|Hans Jacob (Bar) Bär (1677-1759)]]. Willis N. Baer believed he was from Ottenbach, Switzerland, Reformed rather than Mennonite, didn’t arrive in Pennsylvania until 1739 (on the Lydia) and that his ancestors can be traced back several generations in Ottenbach. But '''NOTE''': Willis Nissley Baer's conclusions regarding Henry Baer (1715-1771) are disputed. According to Jane Evans Best, citing ''Die Auswanderung aus dem Knonauer Amt 1648-1750'' by Hans Ulrich Pfister, the Heinrich Bär baptized in Ottenbach on December 22, 1715, and his brother Hans baptized November 20, 1717 (or 1718?), could not have been the men on the Lydia in 1739, and probably went to Lehigh County, Pennsylvania rather than to Lancaster County.
