==Biography==
Andrew Hersche's year of birth is usually given as 1702, although the source for this date is unknown. He may have been born in Friedelsheim, in the Palatinate, in what is now Germany, where his parents were likely living. Friedelsheim is about 20 km west of Mannheim.
Andrew's parents were [[Herschi-19|Christian Herschi]] and [[Zschille-9|Adelheit Zschille]]. He was included in his father's "will." The will was undated, unsigned, and written in German, so wasn't recorded, but it was probated in 1722. An "explanation" of the will, written in English, mentions his "three children Bennadick Herse Andrew Herse Anna Herse." It also mentions 500 acres of land that was to be divided equally between his widow and his three children. Andrew married Mary Catharine _______, probably in about 1725 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. They had the following children:

He purchased land in Salunga, Lancaster PA in 1733.
Andrew (1702-92), also a Mennonite preacher, took up five hundred acres of land east of Big Chikis Creek and south of the Lancaster and Harrisburg turnpike, in West Hempfield Twp.
The Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society (now called Mennonite Life) has a photocopy of a family register, written in German script and translated by Noah G. Good. A short introduction describing the register (not included here) doesn't provide any information about its origin. The translation reads:
: Family Register of three families of Andreas Hershe/ Hershey, great-grandfather, and grandfather Andrew Hershey.
: Grandfather Andrew Hershey was born in Switzerland in the year 1702. From there his father, great-grandfather [to the person writing this account], moved to Friedensheimer Hoff in the Palatinate. In 1719 he moved to America with his father and brother Benjamin where he settled near Lancaster, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. His brother Christian had to remain at the Hoff till 1739 when he also came to America. These three brothers- Andrew, Benjamin, and Christian - were ordained ministers in the Mennonite Church. Andrew died in the year 1792 at the age of 90. He had twelve children: Christian, Andrew, Johannes, Benjamin, Jacob, Abraham, Isaac, Henrich, Peter, Maria, Catharina, and Adti [Ada].
:The fifth of the above-named of Andrew's sons, Jacob, had six children with his wife, Anna Newcomer. Their names were: Johannes, Jacob, Christian, Abrahaf [Abraham], Joseph, and Elisabeth. John was ordained to the office of ''ältesten dienst'' in the Mennonite Church [''Ältestendienst'' is used as bishop more often than deacon, but it can have both meanings. ''Vollendiener'' is often bishop, and ''Armendiener'' is deacon. These words leave no doubt, but ''Ältestendienst'' is less certain.] Joseph also was ordained as preacher in the Mennonite Church. John [Johannes], son of the above-named Jacob, had seven children with his wife, Anna Horst: Jacob, Machdalena [Magdalena], Anna, Fronica [Veronica], Johannes, Benjamin, and Joseph. Jacob was ordained as preacher in the Mennonite Church.

I, ANDREW HERSHEY of Hempfield Township, County of Lancaster, Pa., being old and weak in body, but of sound memory and understanding, "God be thanked," and calling to mind my mortality, and being ‘blessed with some worldly estate, I therefore make this as my last will and testament in manner following: First—I commend my soul to the grace and mercy of God, and my body to be interred in a Christian manner.

===Research Notes===
* Do not confuse this man with [[Herschi-14|Andrew Hershey]] (1697-1754) who also came to Pennsylvania about the same time. Some sources claim the men are cousins, but genealogical information proving this is as yet uncertain. A descendant of Andrew Hersche (1702-1794) has been Y-DNA tested, [https://www.familytreedna.com/groups/hersey/about] but no descendant of Andrew Hershey (1697-1754) has been tested. Until a genetic comparison can be done, it remains speculative as to whether the two Andrews were indeed cousins.
* In his book, The Relations of Milton Snavely Hershey, Lawrence Berger-Knorr (see source list) gives information about the 12 children of Andrew Hershey (page 11). However, he ascribes them to the wrong father. Andrew's will (see below) was written in 1792, but the other Andrew Hershey died in 1754.
* A previous version of this profile gave Andrew the middle name "Guender." Is there any primary source that uses that name? If anyone had that middle name, it was more likely [[Herschi-14|Andrew Herschi Sr. (1698-1754)]] whose mother's LNAB may have been Günder.
